Point of Ayr
Location of the Point of Ayr in Wales |
Point of Ayr ( Welsh : Y Parlwr Du ) is the name of the northernmost point on mainland Welsh . It is located directly north of the village of Talacre in Flintshire , the nearest major town is Prestatyn, about six kilometers away . The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds classifies the Point of Ayr as a nature reserve , as thousands of curlews , oystercatchers , peregrine falcons , pintail ducks and sandwich terns live there.
Hard coal mining
At the Point of Ayr, a total of three coal mining companies were founded one after the other , the first as the Prestatyn Coal Company in 1865. After initially successful test drilling, the project proved unprofitable and was quickly abandoned. In 1873, the Western Mostyn Colliery Company tried again to mine coal, but failed like the Prestatyn Coal Company before.
Only the Point of Ayr Colliery Company , founded in 1883, had success and reached a coal seam in 1890 . The coal was soon lifted to the surface with the help of 75 pit horses , and in 1896 around 356 people were working in the mine. In 1953 there were around 738 workers who mined around 213,000 tons of coal annually. The mine was closed on August 23, 1996 and completely demolished, so no remains of it can be seen today.
