Polig Monjarret (born July 31, 1920 in Pabu , † December 8, 2003 in Ploemeur ) was a French musician , music researcher, resistance fighter and activist. He was committed to the preservation of Breton culture, in particular his contribution to the establishment of the Bodadeg ar Sonerion association .

Career

Monjarret studied at the École régionale des beaux-arts de Rennes . At the same time, he was involved with the scouts , and the head of the youth organization of the Parti national breton, Yann Goulet, approached him. He then got involved in the Bagadoù Stourm . In July 1944 he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Germany, where he was interned in Innsbruck . After his liberation in May 1945, he returned to Brittany.

Breton culture was actively suppressed in France until the 1950s / 1960s. Accordingly, efforts to research and strengthen Breton literature and music during the German occupation were supported by the German administration. Since Monjarret had already actively campaigned here in the 1930s and early 1940s, he was briefly imprisoned here after his return to France. However, after he was released from prison in the summer of 1945, he took up his commitment to Breton music again and in 1946 founded the Bodadeg ar Sonerion association. He later collected pieces of music, from the mid-1950s onwards he traveled through Brittany, armed with a tape recorder in particular , but also visited countries with related Celtic- based cultures such as Wales , Ireland and Galicia .

Monjarret published various books on Breton songs and the works he had collected. In 1947 he reinitiated the Festival de Cornouaille , which had already taken place between 1923 and 1937. In addition, the Kan ar Bobl festival , which has been held in Lorient since 1973, goes back to his idea.
