Polly Dean Holliday (born July 2, 1937 in Jasper , Alabama ) is an American actress .

life and career

Holliday was born in Jasper, Alabama to Velma Mabell and Ernest Sillivan Holliday, a truck driver. Prior to her acting career, Holliday worked as a piano teacher in her native Alabama and in Florida . She began her acting work at the Asolo Repertory Theater in Sarasota , where she worked for 10 years.

She gained great fame through the role of Florence Jean Castleberry alias Flo , which she embodied in the sitcom Imbiß mit Bß . The character's popularity led to its own spin-off show of the same name, in which Polly Holliday again played the title role of Flo. She has also appeared in various films. She appeared in The Untouchables , Gremlins - Little Monsters , Mrs. Doubtfire - The Spiky Nanny and A Gemini Seldom Comes Alone .

In 1973 she moved to New York and also worked as a theater actress. She starred in Alice Childress ' play Wedding Band in the Public Theater and in the Broadway production All Over Town . While working there, she befriended well-known actor Dustin Hoffman , who worked with on the 1976 film All the President's Men .

She was also seen in television series such as B. Golden Girls , in which she played Rose Nylund's blind sister Lily. She played the role of Jill's mother in the sitcom Listen, Who's That Hammering . She was nominated for a Tony Award in 1990 for her role in the Broadway performance The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof .
