The Ponnath The Master Butcher GmbH is a privately held, family owned since 1692 meat products company . It is run by Michael Ponnath in the twelfth generation.

The family business is a specialist in fresh sausage in the self-service area and a provider of regional Bavarian specialties. The products are nationwide u. a. in the food retail trade (from Aldi to Harrods ) and in specialist wholesalers . In 2008, Ponnath had a market share of almost two percent in Germany for sausage products, making it the second largest sausage manufacturer after the Zur Mühlen Group and ahead of Stockmeyer ( Heristo ).

At six production locations - in Kemnath , Knetzgau , Nuremberg , Freiburg , Annaberg-Buchholz and Sušice (Czech Republic) - Ponnath employs around 1,300 people, including more than 100 skilled butchers and butchers.

The history of Ponnath the master butcher goes back over 300 years. In 1692 Johann Adam Ponader practiced the butcher's trade in Kemnath in Bavaria and is considered the company's founding father. Michael Ponnath took over overall responsibility from his father Max Ponnath in 1998. The Schlütter's Echte subsidiary has belonged to Ponnath Die Meistermetzger since 1998 ! from Nuremberg. This is one of the leading manufacturers of original Nuremberg grilled sausages . As products with a protected geographical indication (PGI), they may only be manufactured by companies based in Nuremberg. Original Nürnberger Rostbratwürste are made from pork with the typical spice mix of salt, pepper and marjoram. Schlütter's real one! produces over two million sausages every day in Nuremberg.

In August 2012, Ponnath Die Meistermetzger took over the insolvent large butchery Gruninger from Freiburg-Hochdorf im Breisgau (Baden-Württemberg). The plant in Freiburg is the company's fifth production site. Today, Gruninger is a brand of the company Ponnath Produktions GmbH. Under this brand, the family company Ponnath is continuing the over 100-year tradition of the Gruninger company at the Freiburg production site. The range includes a variety of original Black Forest ham and sausage specialties.

With the takeover of Rodag Food GmbH , Ponnath Die Meistermetzger entered the frozen food business in 2015. In 2015, Ponnath entered the market for meat-free products with the Veggie Gourmet brand. A meat substitute burger patty made by Ponnath on the basis of soy protein , coconut oil and corn starch has been on the market since August 2019 .
