The Heristo Aktiengesellschaft (proper spelling heristo Aktiengesellschaft ) is a group of companies internationally active of the food industry , based in Bad Rothenfelde . In terms of sales, it is one of the largest companies in the German food industry and one of the largest European manufacturers of pet food .
History and structure
The original company, Westfälische Fleischwarenfabrik Stockmeyer , emerged in 1913 from the small butcher's shop with an attached restaurant owned by Richard Middelkamp in Versmold, which was taken over by Lina and Heinrich Stockmeyer . In 1938 the small company had 25 employees. Within a year their number rose to 70. The focus at that time was on the production of raw and cooked sausages. In 1946 his son Werner Stockmeyer and his sister Liselotte Stockmeyer-Risken took over the management of the company. As early as 1950, Stockmeyer employed 200 people , the annual turnover was approx. 70 million DM, and the company became a pioneer in the field of self-service goods. In 1958 it employed 100 people. In 1970 the company was converted into a stock corporation .
In 1978 the company dared to relocate the entire business premises from downtown Versmold to Füchtorf , a district of Sassenberg in Westphalia, in a financial and technical effort . In the following year Liselotte Stockmeyer-Risken's sons, Arno Risken and Heinrich W. Risken, took over management of the company and pursued an active expansion and diversification policy. At this point in time the annual turnover was around 80 million euros.
Since 2003 Heinrich W. Risken has been the company's CEO with sole power of representation.
At the beginning of 2005, Arno Risken sold his shares in heristo AG and left the company. He was charged with aiding and abetting fraud and tax evasion. The assumed amount of damage was 1.4 million euros. For two years, the Bielefeld department for white-collar crime investigated Arno Risken. The tax evasion and fraud charges were dropped, and a number of “psychological aiding and abetting tax evasion” convictions followed.
In 2005, Stockmeyer Verwaltungs AG was renamed to Heristo Aktiengesellschaft . The subsidiaries of the Heristo Aktiengesellschaft, which acts as a strategic holding company, are now divided into four independently acting business areas.
In 2011, the original company, Stockmeyer , was awarded the Federal Honorary Prize for the second time by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
In 2009 the business premises of the Stockmeyer company were searched during a nationwide raid by the Federal Cartel Office. In 2014 the Federal Cartel Office imposed a three-digit million fine on 21 sausage companies, including Stockmeyer, for illegal price fixing.
In 2015, the company was awarded the German Culture Prize of the German Business Culture Association for supporting the “lichtsicht - Projection Biennale”, which has been taking place every two years in Bad Rothenfelde since 2007 . In 2017, 95% of the Hamburg-based poultry meat subsidiary Peter Paulsen (Paulsen Food) was sold to the Thai group Charoen Pokphand Foods .
Key figures
In the 2007 financial year, Heristo Aktiengesellschaft achieved consolidated total sales of EUR 1.592 billion. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase in sales of around 19% or EUR 252 million. The company justifies this growth with a positive development in the individual product segments, in particular the wholesale and foreign trade segments. The group of companies generates a large part of its sales with the manufacture of private labels . In 2004 Heristo AG employed 3,800 people in Germany and abroad. The turnover of Heristo Aktiengesellschaft fell by 3.6% compared to the previous year (2008: 1.696 billion euros). According to the company, the dwindling turnover can be attributed to the international trading business, where Heristo AG turnover fell by 15.7% to 618 million euros (2008: 733 million euros).
The Heristo Group achieved consolidated sales of € 1.45 billion in the 2014 financial year (previous year: € 1.48 billion). As in the previous year, around a quarter of the total turnover was generated by the conSup convenient supplies retail division , while three quarters of the sales were generated in the Appel fine food , saturn petcare group and the stockmeyer group . The average number of employees in 2014 was 2,905 (previous year 2,842) plus 108 trainees.
Management board, supervisory board, shareholders
The company is led by Heinrich W. Risken in the position of the CEO with sole power of representation. The chairman of the supervisory board is his brother Ekkehard Risken. Heristo Holding GmbH is the sole shareholder of Heristo AG. Heinrich W. Risken is also the managing director and owner of Heristo Holding GmbH. Both companies are based in Bad Rothenfelde.

In 2006 the individual IT departments within Heristo AG were bundled in serv.it. At the beginning of 2009, Heristo decided to outsource and outsource the data center operations related to SAP. The contractual partner is IBM Deutschland GmbH .

Foundations
Heinrich Stockmeyer Foundation
In 1995 Heristo founded the Heinrich Stockmeyer Foundation, the purpose of which is to “promote and support scientific food research of all kinds and related research areas” as well as consumer protection. Heinrich W. Risken is the sole director of the foundation, Ekkehard Risken is the managing director and Manfred Gareis is the chairman of the board of trustees.
Endowed professorship at the University of Osnabrück
Since 2007, Heristo has been supporting the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Osnabrück by financing the endowed professorship in " Management and Accounting". Until 2011, the company provided a budget totaling 900,000 euros. The professorship, named after the founder Heinrich W. Risken, is to deal in particular with the topics of "Management and Control in Companies". One focus is on family-run companies such as Heristo AG.
Sports sponsorship
Heristo AG was the main sponsor and majority shareholder in the women's handball national league team ProVital Blomberg-Lippe and one of the sponsors of SC Magdeburg in the 1st handball national league for several years . The company supports sports clubs and sporting initiatives in the regional surroundings of its company locations. The company pays special attention to promoting youth work and popular sports.
