The Pont de l'Abîme ( bridge over the precipice ) is a road bridge between the towns of Gruffy and Cusy in the French department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
The single-lane suspension bridge leads the departmental road D 31 at a height of 96 m over the Chéran gorge and saves travelers a detour of around 8 km over the next bridge further upstream.
It was built in 1887 by Ferdinand Arnodin with his steel construction company based in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire according to his own system: the first and last quarters of the deck, made of a steel framework , are supported by inclined ropes, like a cable-stayed bridge , which lead from the pylon heads directly to are stretched to the deck girder. Only its two middle quarters are connected by vertical hangers to the two suspension cables hanging between the pylons, like a suspension bridge. On February 11, 1888, the bridge was provisionally removed and opened, three years later, on March 25, 1891, the final inspection took place.
