The Pont du Robinet is a suspension bridge that crosses the Rhône on a small road near Donzère in the Drôme department .

Location and name

View of the Pont du Robinet from the Donzère side, the railway tracks at the bottom left and the
Donzère-Mondragon Canal in the background

The bridge stands at a narrow point called Défilé de Donzère , where steep slopes interspersed with rock faces stand close to the river bank. On the western side, that of Donzère, there is just enough space between the bridge and a rock wall for the tracks of the Paris – Marseille railway line . On the other side, located in the Ardèche department , a straight road leads about a kilometer through the former flood bed to a road along the steep slopes there. The traffic sign at the junction, which restricts the passage height to 3 m, refers to the railway underpass, not to the bridge.

The bridge stands about a kilometer upstream from the entrance to the Canal de Donzère-Mondragon .

According to a property file from 1495, the name of the bridge goes back to the landowner Robin Berton , known as Robinet .

history

A ferry has long operated at the site of today's bridge . Corresponding privileges were granted for the first time in 877 and again in 1147 . In 1804 two roller ferries were set up across the arms of the Rhône, which were then separated by a sandbank. The rope stretched over the main arm was attached to the pointed tower at the western end of the bridge. This ferry was in operation until the bridge was built.

In 1833 there were plans to replace the ferries with a suspension bridge. In 1845 Hubert Fournéry received the concession to build the bridge and operate it for 99 years, for which he was to receive the toll revenue and a one-off payment of 130,000 francs. Construction began that same year and was finished in 1847.

The bridge was badly damaged by a storm in 1854 and was largely washed away by floods in 1856. You had to use the ferry again until the bridge was restored in 1859.

In the following decades, the bridge suffered several storm damage, which resulted in various measures to improve the rigidity of the deck girder. In 1902, the roadway girder was partially renewed and stiffened with additional side members. In addition, iron trusses were installed as railings.

During the Second World War , the bridge was destroyed by the Resistance in 1944 in order to prevent the withdrawal of German troops during Operation Dragoon . The reconstruction was completed in 1950, but at the same time discussions began to direct traffic over the Barrage de Donzère , which would arise in connection with the construction of the Canal de Donzère-Mondragon .

In 1974 it was decided to dismantle the suspension bridge for safety reasons; In 1979, the residents of Donzère pushed through its reopening.

The Pont du Robinet has been a listed building since 1985.

Renovation measures were carried out in 2010.

description

Pylon on the bank with
anchor blocks in front

The bridge is, measured from anchor block to anchor block, 333 m long or 300.3 m between the pylons directly on the bank . It is a total of 5.5 m wide, with a roadway 4.5 m and the passage through the pylons only 3.6 m wide. There are no separate sidewalks. The permissible total weight for motor vehicles is limited to 3.5 t.

The pylons on the bank are modeled on triumphal arches , while rectangular, unadorned pillars stand in the river. The three bridge fields formed by the towers are approx. 96 m wide, but not exactly the same length.

The bridge has 4 suspension cables on both sides . Trusses are attached to their hangers made of steel rods, on which the track girder is mounted.
