Ponte BJ Habibie

The Ponte BJ Habibie is a bridge in the East Timorese capital Dili . Shortly before its confluence, it leads over the Mota Claran and connects the Avenida Marginal coming from the west with the Avenida Santana coming from the east. The bridge was inaugurated on August 29, 2019, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the independence referendum on August 30, 1999 by the former East Timorese President José Ramos-Horta . The road bridge cost four million US dollars.

The adjacent Jardim BJ Habibie park was opened together with the bridge . After heavy rainfall, the bank reinforcement at the park partially collapsed in March 2020.

Surname

The bridge is named after the former Indonesian President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie , who made the independence referendum possible in the Indonesian-occupied East Timor. The choice of name led to protests from the population, as Habibie's role is viewed very ambiguously. Habibie had voted for the referendum under international pressure, but prevented the deployment of a UN protection force. After the success of the independence movement, the Indonesian army carried out a punitive action against the East Timorese , which devastated the country and killed around 1,500 to 2,000 people. Due to the loss of East Timor, Habibie ultimately had to forego re-election as Indonesian president. Habibie died a little later after the bridge was inaugurated.
