The Ponte Rio Negro , officially Portuguese Ponte Jornalista Phelippe Daou , is a bridge over the Rio Negro near Manaus in Brazil in the state of Amazonas .

Building

The approximately 3.6 km long bridge crosses the mighty river between Iranduba and Manaus about 11 km before it flows into the Amazon ( Rio Solimões ). The Rio Negro, previously up to over 20 km wide, narrows here through high banks to about 2.7 km wide and can thus be made passable on the bridge path.

The stay cable construction connects the Amazon metropolis with the municipality of Iranduba, 27 kilometers away. With a clearance between 55 and 70 meters depending on the water level of the river, the bridge is even suitable for ocean liners and has four lanes as well as separate cycle and pedestrian paths on both sides.

In addition to the bridge, around 7.4 kilometers of new access roads were created on both sides.

costs

Even with the original calculation of 574 million real , it was supposed to be the most expensive bridge in Brazil in terms of costs per meter. At the beginning of 2011 this figure was corrected upwards again by a further 800 million reals. The bridge actually cost 1,099 million reals (approx. 470 million euros).

It is named after Phelippe Daou (1928-2016), the influential media group co-founder of Rede Amazônica in the state of Amazonas .

Construction and inauguration

Construction began in 2007. However, periods of bad weather and legal disputes repeatedly delayed construction. Originally, the structure was supposed to be inaugurated in October 2010, then in November 2010, then in June 2011. President Dilma Rousseff finally inaugurated the longest bridge over water in Brazil on October 24, 2011. Ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , who four years earlier laid the foundation stone for the billion-dollar project, was also present at the inauguration .

Use

The bridge construction was initiated as part of the Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento (PAC = program to accelerate growth).
Those responsible hope that the enormous infrastructure measure will improve the economic conditions in the metropolitan region of Manaus . According to the government of the state of Amazonas, at least 800,000 people should benefit directly from the measure: In addition to the small town of Iranduba with 40,000 inhabitants, there are also another 30 municipalities .

The next step is to lay fiber optic cables along the structure in order to provide people in the communities with broadband internet .
