The Ponte Kassuende is a road bridge over the Zambezi River near Tete in the Mozambican province of Tete . Construction work on the bridge began in 2011 and was completed in October 2014; it was inaugurated on November 12, 2014. It is the fourth Mozambican bridge over the Zambezi besides the Ponte Dona Ana , the Ponte Samora Machel and the Ponte Armando Guebuza . The operator of the bridge is Operadora Estradas do Zambeze, SA

history

Due to the economic boom in Mozambique - mainly due to foreign investments in the raw materials sector - traffic on the Ponte Samora Machel car bridge that crosses the river increased steadily. The single road bridge was not sufficient, particularly for the connection to the neighboring countries of Malawi and Zimbabwe. For this reason, the Mozambican government put out a tender for the construction of a new road bridge over the Zambezi River near the city of Tete in 2010.

The tender - including the maintenance of connected roads for 30 years - was won by the Estradas do Zambeze, SA consortium consisting of Ascendi , Soares da Costa and Infra Engineering. This in turn commissioned a consortium made up of the Portuguese companies Mota-Engil (43.5%), Soares da Costa (43.5%) and Opway (13%) with the construction of the bridges and roads, with Mota-Engil as consortium leader. Construction work began on April 1, 2011.

The construction work was finished in October 2014. President Armando Guebuza opened the bridge on November 12, 2014 and at the same time announced that it would be named after the former FRELIMO military base in Kassuende (in the Marávia district, Tete province). The inauguration was accompanied by a restriction on the Ponte Samora Machel, which from then on may no longer be used by heavy goods vehicles.

Description of the structure

The bridge is located downstream of the provincial capital Tete and connects the Samora Machel district (on the south bank) with the town of Benga in the Moatize district on the north bank. The southern access road is three kilometers long, the northern 10.5 kilometers.

The bridge itself is 1,586 meters long, with two longer, one behind the other viaducts (both 433 meters long) on the south bank leading to the actual river crossing, which in turn spans a distance of 715 meters via five pillars. The bridge is - including sidewalks - 14.53 meters wide, the largest arch span is 135 meters. The bridge is tolled , the toll stations are located on the access roads.

The cost of building the bridge was 80 million euros. The total project costs amount to 105.263 million euros. This also includes the associated expansion of 260 kilometers of the national highways EN7 and EN8 - connecting to Malawi and Zimbabwe -, the expansion of 270 kilometers of the EN9 between Cassacatiza and Tete (to Zambia) and 150 kilometers of the EN304 between Colomue and Mussacama.

The parallel road bridge Ponte de Samora Machel is only five kilometers upstream.
