Pontic Pentapolis
The Pontic Pentapolis (also called Thracian Pentapolis ) was a union of five Pontic coastal cities in today's Bulgaria and Romania and was originally directed against the rule of Lysimachus during the Diadoch Wars .
The members were:
- Apollonia (today Sozopol in Bulgaria),
- Kallatis (now Mangalia in Romania),
- Mesembria (now Nessebar in Bulgaria),
- Odessos (now Varna in Bulgaria) and
- Tomis (now Constanța in Romania).
According to Theodor Mommsen , Tomis was the capital of the alliance that comprised the Greek coastal cities of the Roman province of Moesia inferior (Lower Moesia ).
The inland provincial capital Markianopolis (today Dewnja in Bulgaria), a Trajanian foundation, was added later, making the alliance of cities the Pontic Hexapolis .
