ASK 13 glider on short final approach to runway 36L

The Kirchzarten glider airfield is a glider airfield located around ten kilometers southeast of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau , Germany , between the communities of Kirchzarten and Oberried . It is the home airfield of the glider club Breisgauverein für Segelflug (BVS), based in Freiburg and Kirchzarten , which built the airfield and the local facilities in the 1970s. Until 2009 two other glider clubs (AKA Flieg Freiburg and CFM Emmendingen) shared the airfield with the BVS. Since then, they have relocated their flight operations to Freiburg Airport.

Flight operations

The flying season usually extends over the summer half-year from April to October over all weekends. The airfield is unusable in the winter months.

At the moment, only winch starts are permitted at Kirchzarten airfield . Take-offs by motorized aircraft are strictly limited due to local noise restrictions. F-tow is only permitted on special occasions .

Runway 18C / 36C (1170 m) is used for winch launch operations, but mainly runway 36C due to local wind conditions. Landings are usually carried out on the two shorter runways, but in calm wind conditions and low traffic volumes, the central runway in the opposite direction is also used to make up time in flight operations.

Technical specifications

The airfield is only permitted for gliders, motor gliders and ultralight aircraft with PPR to a limited extent. Take-offs from motor-powered aircraft also require prior approval. The three grass runways are 1,170, 460 and 260 m long and therefore also offer enough landing distance for motor-powered aircraft. Aircraft fuels are not available. Around 2,500 aircraft movements are registered at Kirchzarten airfield every year.

Facilities

The Kirchzarten airfield now has a hangar for the Breisgauverein for gliding , three grass runways, a double drum winch, a clubhouse, a tower and a nearby campsite. On weekends, depending on the meteorological conditions, the site is open locally from around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kirchzarten glider flight can be reached on the frequency 126.035 MHz .

Air groups

The airfield is used by the "Breisgauverein für Segelflug" founded in 1962 (placeholder). In addition, the glider pilots of Akaflieg Freiburg and CFM Emmendingen do their flights from the Kirchzarten airfield less often. Furthermore, a model flying club is based in Kirchzarten, which organizes its flight operations on Wednesdays and Fridays in the afternoons.
