style

Popel Coumou developed her method over the years at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. She builds architectural spaces as two-dimensional models by gluing colored paper surfaces and strips of modeling clay onto a sheet of paper or by cutting surfaces out of the paper. She transforms these collages into realistic-looking rooms using light from behind or projected onto them and perspective distortion. Popel then photographs these models with a SLR camera in low resolution and then enlarges the photos, which makes the images more grainy and leaves room for interpretation. The choice of colors, the incidence of light and the mostly empty rooms should put the absence of people in the foreground and underline the silence. At first the rooms were still concrete, but over time they removed most of the representational furniture until only the empty rooms remained. Later she built 3D models of the rooms with strong effects of light and shadow and photographed them again. She also seldom builds miniature rooms out of clay, paper and fabrics. She then photographs them in such a way that the impression is created that they can actually be entered. Each of her works is handmade, including printing, and is therefore unique.
