Popondetta is the capital of the Oro Province of Papua New Guinea in the southeast of the island of New Guinea . It is located in the fertile lowlands east of the Owen Stanley Mountains . It had 19,556 inhabitants at the 2000 census.
history
During the Second World War, the place near Girua Airport became an important military base for the Allies . The place was conquered by the Allies on November 18, 1942 and then greatly expanded. After the eruption of the Lamington volcano , it was named the new capital of the province.

The Queen Alexandra bird lives in the area around the city in the rainforest.
