Poppo (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poppo († June 27, 1125 or 1126 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from February 1125 or 1126 until his death in June of the same year .

Münsterschwarzach before Poppo

Before Abbot Poppo, the Münsterschwarzach Abbey was shaped primarily by the reforms of Gorze . The prelates of the monastery were appointed by the Würzburg bishops who also wanted to promote the renewal. Important predecessors of the abbot were Alapold and the later canonized Egbert , who came straight from the abbey in Gorze. Under Abbot Rupert , Poppos's direct predecessor, a Würzburg bishop was even consecrated in the Münsterschwarzach monastery.

Life

Little is known about Abbot Poppo due to his short tenure. It is clear that he died already in election year and the blessing could not get. The reason for this could be the plague that raged in the monastery during these years and also killed Poppo's successor. The date of death in the Münsterschwarzach necrology is June 27, and the necrology of the Michelsberg monastery in Bamberg is June 28. In the latter, the abbot is listed under the name Pabo. Poppo died on 1125 or 1126.
