The Porce II dam (Spanish Represa Porce II ) is located in the Antioquia department in northern central Colombia , 75 km northeast of the city of Medellín . The dam, located in the Colombian Central Cordillera , is on the Río Porce at river kilometer 94. Upstream is the Carlos Lleras Restrepo hydropower plant on the Medellín River and the Riogrande I and Hidromontañitas hydropower plants on the Grande Río . Downstream is the Porce III dam . The Porce II dam was completed in 1999–2001. The system is operated by Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM).
dam
The Porce II dam consists of a 123 m high rolled concrete dam. The crown length is 455 m, the crown width 9 m, the base width 117 m, the dam volume 1.4 million m³. On the right side the dam is supplemented by a 45 m high dam with a volume of 1.6 million m³.
Reservoir
The Río Porce is dammed over a length of about 8 km. The reservoir covers a maximum area of 8.9 km². The storage volume is 142.7 million m³, the usable storage space is 83 million m³.
Hydroelectric power plant
A 4.5 km long pipeline leads the water from the dam to the underground hydropower plant ( ⊙ ). The cavern power plant is located 5 km downstream on the right slope of the valley. It has three Francis turbines with a total output of 392 MW. The planned average annual energy production is around 1600 GWh. The gross height of fall is 239.7 m, the volume of water used is 113.6 m³ / s. Below the power plant, the water returns to the river via a 540 m long tunnel and a 120 m long canal ( ⊙ ). The associated substation is located about one kilometer north of the power plant ( ⊙ ).
