Coordinates: 14 ° 53 ′ S , 141 ° 37 ′ E The Aboriginal Shire of Pormpuraaw is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 4395 km² and has about 750 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula in the north of the state on the Gulf of Carpentaria about 500 km northwest of Cairns and 1810 km northwest of the capital Brisbane . The area covers a longer stretch of coast between the mouths of the Holroyd and Coleman Rivers.
All settled residents live in the settlement of Pormpuraaw on the southern coast of the LGA near the Chapman River.
history
In 1938 the Edward River Mission for the Aborigines was established in the area. In 1967 it was placed under official administration and two years later renamed Pormpuraaw. In 2004 the settlement got the status of an Aboriginal Shire and since then has been under limited local self-government of the indigenous people living there.
administration
The Pormpuraaw Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
