Portales is a city in the east of the US state New Mexico in Roosevelt County . It has 11,131 inhabitants and an area of 17.7 km². Eastern New Mexico University , the third largest university in the state, is also located in the city . In Portales is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ).
history
Portales was founded in 1800 as Los Portales . Portales means gate in German. The city's first mayor was Washington Ellsworth Lyndsey .
