Portuguese Africans
Portuguese Africans (also: Luso-Afrikaner , Portuguese: luso-africano ) are people of Portuguese origin who were born in Africa or people who were born in Portugal but who spent a large part of their lives on African soil. The term should not be confused with Afro-Portuguese or Afro-Lusitano , as these terms are used for Portuguese with black African ancestry.
In terms of numbers, the largest Portuguese community in Africa lives in South Africa (around 400,000 in 2008), while significant minorities live in Namibia and other Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa such as Angola , Cape Verde , Guinea-Bissau , Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe .
Guinea-Bissau became an independent country in 1974, followed by the rest of the former Portuguese colonies in 1975. Most of the Portuguese settlers returned to Portugal, where they were called returnees (Portuguese: retornados ). Some emigrated to other countries such as South Africa, Malawi , Namibia and Zimbabwe , Brazil and the United States of America .
The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP) was founded in 1996. Later some Portuguese and a number of Portuguese Brazilians asked for economic and educational assistance for African-Portuguese speaking countries. Some of these Portuguese have made Africa their permanent residence.
