Poseidon ( Russian Посейдон , former name Status-6, Russian Статус-6 ) is a Russian -made underwater drone with nuclear propulsion . In the GRAU index , the 2M39 drone is designated and the NATO code name is Kanyon . The underwater drone is in the development phase.

According to Russian data from 2015, Poseidon should be able to reach speeds of over 200 km / h with the help of a nuclear drive, dive up to 1000 m deep and have an operational range of 10,000 km. According to later reports from Russian media from 2018, the range should be significantly lower and the maximum speed should be 110–130 km / h. According to unofficial information, which can be traced back to a source from the TASS news agency , Poseidon is said to use supercavitation- like effects to increase the speed . According to image analyzes by Western armaments experts, the Poseidon is not considered to be capable of supercavitation due to the shape of the hull. However, this may mean the Air Support Vessel (ASV) technology. According to Russian information, Poseidon is invulnerable to any previously known defense measures.

Poseidon has an estimated trunk length of 20–24 m and a diameter of 1.6–2.0 m. According to Russian information, Poseidon will be transported and launched by submarines . After take-off, the drone should navigate autonomously on a preprogrammed route to the target area. A nuclear warhead with an explosive force of 2, 50 or 100  megatons is to be detonated in the target area . Objectives as naval bases or coastal areas are carried by the nuclear explosion resulting tsunami destroyed -wave. It is also speculated whether the nuclear warhead is a so-called salted bomb , with which large areas are to be radioactively irradiated in the long term .

The testing of the Poseidons is to be carried out with the project 949A -Boot Belgorod . As the first carrier platform that is under construction is Project 09852 -Boot Khabarovsk provided.

The development of Poseidon was described by Russia from the mid-2010s as a reaction to the United States' withdrawal from the ABM treaty and its establishment of a global missile defense system. Initial reports of the Poseidon come from the United States Department of Defense in September 2015 . After that, Russian sources leaked information about this weapon into the media, possibly targeted. In March 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced the Poseidon in his speech to the Federal Assembly.
