The Danau Poso (German: Poso-See) in Sulawesi Tengah is the third largest lake in Indonesia .

geography

The 32,000 hectare lake is 600 meters above sea level and an average of 450 meters deep. At the northern end of the lake is the town of Tentena, where the Poso river starts its run to the coast. Other places on the lake are Taipa in the west and Pendolo in the south.

Flora and fauna

The lake is known for its wild orchids, which can be admired in Taman Anggrek Bancea. Endemic fish the lake are the rice fish Oryzias nebulosus , Oryzias nigrimas and Oryzias orthognathus , the four types of rice fish species Adrianichthys , including the Entenschnabelkärpfling and Stretched Poso mosquito fish , the Halfbeak Nomorhamphus celebensis and the goby Mugilogobius sarasinorum . The Poso Bungu goby appears to be extinct, as it was last detected in 1987. Possible causes for their disappearance are the pollution of Lake Poso and the importation of foreign fish species. The sponge genus Pachydictyum, which only occurs in Lake Poso, is remarkable . It is not closely related to the freshwater sponges (Spongillidae) and probably comes from ancestors living in the sea.

Culture

Every year at the end of August, the Danau Poso Festival with traditional sports, singing and dance performances is held in Tentena.
