The stretched Poso-Kärpfling ( Adrianichthys poptae ) is an extremely rare species of fish from the rice fish family . It is endemic to Danau Poso ( Lake Poso ) on Sulawesi . The species is named in honor of the Dutch ichthyologist Canna Maria Louise Popta (1860–1929).

features

The stretched Poso-Kärpfling reaches a length of 17.1 cm. This makes it one of the largest species of rice fish. The jaws are almost the same length. The eyes are noticeably smaller than the nose. 75 to 85 scales are arranged in side rows. There are 11 to 13 branched dorsal rays and 24 to 27 anal rays. The color of the body is brownish yellow. The top of the head is dark brown.

Way of life

The stretched Poso-Kärpfling lives in the open water area of the Poso-See lake. During the spawning season between November and January, the Poso-Kärpflinge form large swarms at a depth of 12 to 15 m. The eggs are attached to the body between the pelvic fins . The young hatch after the fertilized eggs are shed into the water.

status

The stretched Poso-Kärpfling is threatened with extinction due to water pollution, overfishing as well as competition and stalking by introduced fish species .
