The Schaufelkärpflinge ( Adrianichthys ) are a genus of small freshwater fish from the order of the garfish-like (Beloniformes) that live endemically in the Indonesian Poso Lake on the island of Sulawesi . In Sulawesi they are called buntingi , in English bunting .

features

Schaufelkärpflinge are 8.5 to 17 cm long and have a more or less elongated body. As typical fish living close to the surface, they have a straight back line, are more or less deep-bellied with a straight edge of the abdomen, have an upper mouth and a dorsal fin that is far back.

The monophyletic genus can be diagnosed by five distinct synapomorphies : a paired or single pre- ethmoid cartilage, orbit that extends above the upper edge of the head, a flat and wide premaxillary , a relatively straight maxillary, and two to four irregular rows of small, slender teeth in Upper and lower jaw.

Seen from the side, the skull is flat and wide at the level of the ethmoid bone . The posterior teeth on the premaxillary are not enlarged. These two traits are also found in various dentist pups , but not in the related rice parsley ( oryzias ).

Danger

Of the four species, Adrianichthys kruyti and A. poptae are extremely rare or have already died out. Reasons are water pollution, overfishing and competition and stalking by imported fish species ( Mozambique cichlid ( Oreochromis mossambicus ) and carp ( Cyprinus carpio )). A. oophorus was still quite common in 1995.
