The rice fish (Adrianichthyidae), also called Asiatic light-eye fish , are a family of freshwater fish belonging to the order of the garfish-like (Beloniformes). They live in fresh and brackish water from India to Indonesia , north to Japan . A total of 20 species are endemic to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi .

features

They are light-colored, relatively colorless fish four to eight centimeters in size from the upper water regions. The large anal fin is striking. A lateral line is missing, as is vomer , the outer wing bone (ectopterygoid), metapterygoid and supracleithrum (a bone of the shoulder girdle). The nostrils are paired. The number of Branchiostegal rays is four to seven.

Systematics

The rice fish are at the origin of the family tree of the garfish-like (Beloniformes) and look similar to the sister group of the garfish-like, the toothfish (Cyprinodontiformes). There are over 35 species in two genera , one of which, Adrianichthys , is phylogenetically within Oryzias . Oryzias is therefore not a monophylum .
