The duck-billed fish ( Adrianichthys kruyti ) is an extremely rare or already extinct species of fish from the rice fish family . It is endemic in Lake Poso ( Danau Poso ) on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi . The specific epithet honors the Dutch anthropologist Albertus Christiaan Kruyt (1869–1949).
description
The duckbill carp reaches a head-torso length of 11 centimeters and a maximum length of 16 centimeters. The body is elongated and slightly flattened. It has 14 to 16 dorsal rays and 24 to 25 anal rays. The most characteristic feature of the duckbill caribbean is its overhanging upper jaw, which has similarities with a duckbill and which gives the species its common name. The large eyes protrude above the head profile when viewed from the sides.
Way of life
Little is known about the way of life of the duck-billed carp. He lives in the deep areas of Lake Poso. One specimen was reported to be a hermaphrodite .
status
The last record of the duck-billed parasite was in September 1983 when two specimens were collected. An investigation of the fish catches in Lake Poso in 1986 could no longer confirm the existence of the species. Some local fishermen made a connection between the disappearance of the debeaked carp and the eruption of the Colo volcano on the island of Una Una in Tomini Bay in 1983. This is considered a baseless claim, however, as the ash rain seen in the satellite photos of the volcanic eruption was blown west rather than south where Lake Poso is. It is more likely that introduced fish species such as the striped snakehead ( Channa striata ) and the Mozambique cichlid ( Oreochromis mossambicus ) as well as their parasites, the duck-billed pork and two other fish species endemic in Lake Poso - Adrianichthys poptae and Mugilogobius amadi - at the edge of the Ausrottung urged or already exterminated. Up until the 1994 Red List, the duck-billed parasit was classified as "critically endangered" by the IUCN. After the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat wrote in a study in 1996 that the species was probably extinct, the duck-billed parasit was upgraded to the category "critically endangered" in the same year.
