The Potocki Chapel is one of the 19 chapels that surround the Kraków Cathedral . It is also called the Różyców Chapel and Padniewski Chapel.
history
The chapel was donated in 1381 by Bishop Zawisza Kurozwęcki . The name Różyców Chapel goes back to the bishop's coat of arms , in which roses (Polish: Róże ) are depicted. It was completed and inaugurated in 1425 under Mikołaj von Michałów . Jan Michałowicz converted it into a mausoleum for Bishop Filip Padniewski in the late Renaissance style between 1572 and 1757 . Hence the second name of the chapel comes from. After all, Piotr Nobile expanded the chapel in the classicism style between 1832 and 1840 for Zofia Branicka-Potocka as a mausoleum for the Potocki family . With it have Bertel Thorvaldsen , Francesco Maria Lanci , Wilhelm Hofbauer , Giobbe Axerio , Giovanni Axerio , Josef Kähsmann and Johann Georg Danninger worked at the chapel.
crypt
The following were buried in the crypt below the chapel:
inner space
The baroque interior is lined with red marble. The angel figures were created by Josef Kähsmann, the bronze works by Johann Georg Danninger. Danninger is also the author of the altar. Filip Padniewski's Renaissance tomb goes back to Jan Michałowicz. The figure of Christ on Artur Stanisław Potocki's tomb was created by Bertel Thorvaldsen, as were the busts of Artur Stanisław Potocki and Zofia Branicka-Potocka. The crucifixion scene was painted by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri called Guercino .
