Francesco Maria Lanci
Francesco Maria Lanci , in Polish Franciszek Maria Lanci , (* 1799 in Fano ; † November 12, 1875 in Warsaw ) was a Polish architect of Italian origin who worked in Warsaw, Krakow and other places in Poland. His son was the architect Witold Lanci .
Life
Born in Italy, Lanci studied at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome . He received a gold medal for his thesis - a project to restore the Roman church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli . He was appointed honorary professor at the academy early on .
In 1825 the Polish Małachowski family invited him to their residence in Końskie . For the family he built a neo-Gothic church, a chapel of the same type and an orangery in the Egyptian style. From then on, Lanci lived and worked in Poland. He built or renovated churches and residences across the country. From around 1830 he lived in Krakow. Here he designed the sarcophagus by Tadeusz Kościuszko together with the sculptor Paolo Filippi . From 1834 to 1839 he was an inspector and builder of the university buildings. During this time he converted several palaces for the Potocki family. In 1837 he built a workers' settlement and a hospital for the mine in Dąbrowa Górnicza .
From 1844, Lanci lived in Warsaw. In addition to working on Wilanów Palace , he designed several buildings for the capital and the surrounding area. In 1857 he received the diploma of a "Master Builder III. Class". After 1863, his health did not allow him to accept any further assignments. He died in his Warsaw apartment on Ulica Widok in 1875 .
Lanci's work stands out from that of contemporary architects, it often contains surprising detailed solutions. The reference to historical models meant more to him than the use of stylistic details from earlier architectural styles. Rather, he tried to bring historical ideas into his projects. The architectural historian Aldona Bartczak also saw an influence of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and contemporary British architecture publications in his work .
