The Church of St. Catherine (Polish: Kościół św. Katarzyny ) in Warsaw is located in the Służew district of the Ursynów district at 17 Fosa Street . In place of the current church building, a wooden church was built in the 13th century. The building in its current form was built in the middle of the 19th century. The associated parish is the oldest in Warsaw.

history

The church, dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria , is located on the site of the Benedictine mission in 1065. The results of archaeological excavations indicate that a centuries-old pagan cult site was located on the same site before Christian use. The parish of St. Catherine was founded by Duke Conrad of Mazovia in 1238; the Poznań bishop Paweł Bninski laid the cornerstone for the construction. Until the 18th century the church belonged to the Diocese of Poznan, now part of Warsaw. From 1245 to the 18th century, the church and parish were under the church patronage of the Służewski family (Radwan coat of arms) until Służew was acquired by the owners of the Wilanów estate.

A wooden church was built in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages this was replaced by a wall in the Mazovian Gothic style . In 1742 August Aleksander Czartoryski rebuilt the building. Under the architect Francesco Maria Lanci there was another renovation in 1848, this time in the neo-Romanesque style. The bell tower was built in 1881 in place of a previous one. It has five bells - from the 16th, 18th and 20th centuries. The rectory was built in 1640; the clay floors in the hall date from this time. The church ensemble survived the Second World War without major damage. The church has been continuously renovated since 1985.

The interior of the church was destroyed during the Swedish invasion . The Warsaw sculptor Johann Georg Plersch redesigned it in the Warsaw Baroque style .

In front of the church is the memorial created in 1993 to commemorate the victims of communism from 1944 to 1956 (Polish: Pomnik Męczenników Terroru Komunistycznego 1944-1956 ) by Maciej Szańkowski and Sławomir Korzeniewski.

In 1965 and 1989 the church, bell tower, rectory and cemetery of the parish were placed under monument protection (No. 532/1965 and 1383/1989). In 1992, part of the area surrounding the church was also declared a natural monument, as there are some 300 year old linden and plane trees here as well as remains of a tunnel system with bats. Trees and tunnels belonged to the former residence and park Gucin Gaj , some of the land of which was acquired by the church in the 1930s.
