Pochajna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Potschajna ( Ukrainian Почайна , Russian Почайна / Potschaina ; altostslawisch : water, moisture) was an 8 km long right tributary (after a few sources, also a right side arm ) the Dnepr , which in the area of today's Kiev Rajons Obolon arose and south Podils flowed into the Dnieper. It went up in the 18th and 19th centuries in the wake of river course changes and canal works to improve the navigability of the Dnepr. Although the Pochajna has disappeared from the Kiev cityscape for more than a century, it was still a navigable river in which, according to the majority of experts, Prince Vladimir I, after his own baptism the year before, received his subjects by a grand ducal decree in 988 and transition to the Christian faith continued, connected with important historical events in the Kievan Rus and their successor states for more than a thousand years .

A side valley is Babyn Yar , in which over 33,000 Ukrainian Jews were murdered from the end of September 1941.

Traces of names

The Pochayna gave its name to the western Ukrainian Pochayiv in Ternopil Oblast , which was founded by monks fleeing westward in the wake of the Mongol storm in 1237-1240, whose looted monastery was on the bank of the Kiev Pochayna. Likewise, the Nikolaj Naberezhny Church ( Ukrainian Церква Миколи Набережного , Russian Це́рковь Нико́лая На́бережного ) in Skovorody Street 12 owes its name affix to the former Meyna (on the bank of Dneprajna ) . In addition, the Pochajnynska Street ( Ukrainian Почайнинська вулиця ) in Podil reminds of the former location of the “sacred” river.
