Poul Hagen Reumert (born March 26, 1883 in Copenhagen , Denmark , † April 19, 1968 there ) was a Danish actor in the stage and film.

Live and act

The son of the actor Elith Reumert (1855-1934) trained as a drama student at the Royal Theater (Det kongelige Teater) in his hometown in 1901 and made his stage debut the following year. In that year (1902) he joined the Copenhagen Folketeatret, to which he remained loyal until 1908. Then Reumert moved to Det nye Teater, where he was given preference for comic roles in operas and operettas. With his move to the Royal Theater (Det kongelige Teater), Reumert was able to prove his art in classical speaking roles between 1911 and 1919, but he continued to be loyal to the comic subject. In 1910, he made a significant debut in front of the camera in 1910, which was very important for his film career: in the drama Abfalls he took on the male lead of circus artist Rudolf Stern alongside another debutante, the later screen idol Asta Nielsen . This film became a world success.

Despite further film roles - initially in the early silent film until 1923, from 1939 also for around ten years in sound films, where he was preferably cast as a dignitary (professor, director, manufacturer and once even as crown prince) - Poul Reumert remained primarily a man of the Theater. He was a member of the Dagmarteatret ensemble from 1919 to 1922, but returned to the Royal Theater in 1922, only to leave Denmark's most famous theater in 1930 in protest against Adam Poulsen's inauguration. Another seven years followed, which Reumert spent at Dagmarteatret. In 1937 Reumert finally returned to the Royal Theater and remained exclusively associated with this venue until its last performance 30 years later. In his theater career spanning around two-thirds of the 20th century, he was seen as Polonius in Shakespeare's Hamlet , as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice by the same poet, as Arnolphe in Molière's The School of Women , as Jeronimus in Holberg's Mascarade , as Herman in Den politiske Kandestøber by the same Danish poet, as Pastor Manders in Ibsen's Ghosts , as Daniel Hejre in Der Bund der Jugend by the same poet, as Swedenhielm in Bergman's Swedenhielms , as Triquet in Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin and as steward in Richard Straussen's opera Ariadne auf Naxos . Poul Reumert celebrated particular success with his interpretation of Peer Gynt .

Reumert ended his career on stage almost a year before his death on May 31, 1967, at a royal performance in honor of the marriage of the future Queen Margrethe of Denmark . The movie veteran last appeared in front of the camera at the age of 80 at the side of another screen veteran, Clara Pontoppidan , in a family drama adapted for television in 1963. Poul Reumert is considered the most important local actor of his time in his country.

additional

Reumert has also authored two books on the art of acting, "Masker og Mennesker" (1959) and "Teaterets Kunst" (1963).

The artist, who has received various awards and honors, was married several times, most recently (since 1932) for 31 years, until her death in an airplane accident in 1963, with Icelandic colleague Anna Borg (1903–1963).

In honor of Reumert, the Årets Reumert theater prize has been awarded in several categories since 1998 .
