Povilas Plechavičius

Povilas Plechavičius (born February 1, 1890 in Židikai , Mažeikiai Rajongemeinde , † December 19, 1973 in Chicago , Illinois) was a lieutenant general in the Lithuanian Army .

Life

Plechavičius made the Abitur at the grammar school in Moscow . He then completed a trade institute and the military academy for cavalry . He took part in the First World War in the Russian cavalry. During the revolution he fought against the Bolsheviks in southern Russia . Since 1918 he lived in Samogitia . Plechavičius was head of the General Staff of Lithuania and, as such, led a successful coup against the elected government in 1926 . During the German occupation he organized with the armed forces fighting against the Red Army , but independent Lithuanian troops. When the Red Army marched in, he emigrated to Western Europe and from there to the USA .
