Povl Ahm

Povl Ahm CBE FICE FREng (born September 26, 1926 in Aarhus ; † May 15, 2005 ) was an important structural engineer and former director of Ove Arup & Partners .

Ahm studied at the Polyteknisk Læreanstalt in Copenhagen , where he graduated in 1949.

In 1952 he started at Ove Arup and Partners in London , where he worked with Basil Spence and Ove Arup at Coventry Cathedral .

Ahm was also involved in early designs for the Sydney Opera House and worked on other prestigious projects such as the listed poultry market in Smithfield (London) or the Center Pompidou . In 1957 Ahm became a partner in Arup Group Limited , in 1965 a partner and in 1977 one of the directors; from 1989 to 1992 chairman of the company. From 1992 to 1996 he was chairman of the Association of Consulting Engineers .

When Arup's design won the Gateshead Viaduct competition in 1965 , Ahm started the company's new transport division, specializing in bridges.

In 1981 Ahm became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering . In 1993, Ahm was the first to receive the gold medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers ; in the same year he received the order CBE.

The University of Warwick awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1994 .

He died of cancer in 2005.
