Prelature in Český Krumlov

The prelature in Český Krumlov (German Krummau ), a town in the Jihočeský kraj (South Bohemia) region in the Czech Republic , was the seat of the pastors, archdeans and, from 1655, the prelates of Krumlov. The building has been a listed building since May 3, 1958. The prelature has housed the city library since 1991, and it also houses offices and apartments. Craft markets are held in the courtyard all year round.

history

According to a document from 1406, Pastor Hostislav von Bílsko bought two medieval townhouses to build or expand an existing rectory.

Portal with the year MDLXXVI

Around 1576 the building was renovated in the Renaissance style, which is reminiscent of the year MDLXXVI above the portal.

In 1601 a covered, one-story corridor the width of "four men" was carved into the rocky slope of the Vltava River behind the prelature, which led from the neighboring Jesuit college directly into the church of St. Vitus .

In 1611 Protestants ravaged the prelature. Early baroque renovations and extensions took place after the fires in 1624 and 1652.

The prelature had also included a brewery since 1596, in which a devastating fire broke out on March 2, 1768, which damaged the entire prelature and part of the neighboring Jesuit college. After this fire, the stairs and arcades were designed in the Rococo style. In addition, František Jakub Prokyš painted the rococo hall on the first floor splendidly.

In 1897–1902 the historicizing alterations to the current appearance of the building were carried out.

Building description

The four-wing, two- to four-storey building has a slightly trapezoidal inner courtyard. The northern neo-renaissance facade to the Horní (Upper Street) is divided into three parts and covered with letter sgraffito . The two side parts have been crowned by gables since around 1900.

use

With the rise of the Rosenbergs , the parish Krumau developed into an archdeanate in 1443 and finally into a prelature in 1655. The prelates were not only important ecclesiastical dignitaries, but until 1848 also administrators of the large economic property belonging to them.

In 1991 the city library was moved from Panské ulice (Herrengasse) to the prelature.
