The President of the Federal Police Headquarters is the head of the Federal Police Headquarters in Germany . " President of the Federal Police Headquarters" is both an official title and an office under legal status . He is a political officer . The office was created as part of the restructuring and replaced the former inspector of the Federal Police on January 1st, 2008. The office was filled on March 1st, 2008 by Matthias Seeger . He was put into temporary retirement in July 2012 . On August 1, 2012 Dieter Romann took over the office, who as an administrative lawyer was not previously a police officer.

The President of the Federal Police Headquarters is a federal police enforcement officer if the last office he held before this office was conferred was also that of a police enforcement officer.

While the inspector of the Federal Police was subdivision head of the former subdivision B II of the Federal Ministry of the Interior , the President heads the Federal Police Headquarters as the highest federal authority, to which some tasks that were based in the Federal Ministry of the Interior have been transferred as part of the organizational reform. Thus, he is the superior of all members of the Federal Police in the higher authority of the Federal Police Headquarters as well as the Federal Police Directorates subordinate to it and the Federal Police Academy. With the office he fulfills, among other things, the professional function of border commissioner of the Ministry of the Interior.

The office is  assigned to salary group B 9 (currently 11,934.86 euros) and valued higher than the office of the inspector of the Federal Police (BesGr. B 7 BBesG ), which existed until 2008 .
