As a law enforcement officer of the German Federal Police, the inspector of the Federal Police was most recently head of Subdivision B II of the Federal Ministry of the Interior . He performed ex officio the professional function of border commissioner of the Ministry of the Interior. Further, the incumbent the highest ranking Uniform the federal police and in which was grade B 7 of the pay regulation B grouped.

The office was created in 1951 as the inspector of the Federal Border Guard . Since the renaming of the Federal Border Police to Federal Police on July 1, 2005, the designation was Inspector of the Federal Police .

As part of the reorganization of the Federal Police, the role of Federal Police Inspector was transferred to the newly created office of President of the Federal Police Headquarters in March 2008 .

From July 1, 2005 to December 31, 2007, the sole holder of the office was Udo Burkholder . (Since March 21, 2001 already inspector of the Federal Border Police )
