The precision tool mechanic has been the new job title of the previously established job description of the cutting tool mechanic since August 1, 2018 .

The cutting tool mechanic was an apprenticeship in the craft in the field of metal technology and developed from the profession of cutler in the late 1980s as part of a vocational and training reform in the craft .

There were two main occupations:

  • Cutting tool and grinding technology (tool grinding technology)
  • Cutting machine and knife forging technology

With a focus on cutting tool and grinding technology , the cutting tool mechanic mainly dealt with the production and re-sharpening of tool blades , in particular of machining tools for machining on machine tools. These include drills , saws or milling cutters .

With a focus on cutting machine and knife forging technology , scissors , knives and cutting tools of all kinds were manufactured and repaired and maintained, including the associated cutting machines.

The training period in the precision tool mechanic trade is three and a half years.

The precision tool mechanic trade is license-free and is no longer subject to the compulsory mastery .
