Tool grinding , as a part of grinding, is a cutting production process with abrasives to manufacture or re-sharpen cutting tools.

Cutting tools for cutting machining in the metal, wood and plastic processing after the blunting made operational by nachschärfendes grinding again by the cutting edge back into the correct blade geometry is brought. This regrinding restores the quality of the surface on the cutting edge and thus improves both the cutting quality and the durability and thus the profitability of the tool. Can be sharpened tools such as chisels , chisels , turning tools , planing tools , milling cutters , drills , taps , dies , reamers , countersinks , broaches and saw blades .

Tool grinding in the broader sense also includes the manufacture of new cutting tools . In some cases, the tools are preprocessed using coarser processes such as rolling or milling , before the actual cutting edge is ground as the last work step ; in some cases, tools are completely manufactured from the solid round bar by tool grinding.

Tool grinding takes place on tool grinding machines that are either operated manually, have an automatic sequence that is started manually, or using CNC- controlled machines.

Tools made of HSS are sharpened with grinding wheels made of CBN or corundum , while diamond grinding wheels are used for tools made of hard metal .

Tool grinding is often carried out as a service by handcrafted tool grinding shops. The profession in the craft is the precision tool mechanic .
