The great pygmy owl ( Glaucidium sjostedti , syn .: Taenioglaux sjostedti ), also called the pygmy owl, is a species of bird from the family of real owls (Strigidae).

Some authors assign this species, together with others, to the genus Taenioglaux .

The Latin name refers to Yngve Sjöstedt .

The species is found in Central Africa , Equatorial Guinea , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Gabon , Cameroon , Nigeria and the Republic of the Congo .

Their distribution area mainly includes forest areas in the lowlands and parts of the Cameroon Mountains .

The great pygmy owl is 20 to 25 cm tall and weighs around 140 g. The head and neck are brown with white banding, the face is brown with yellow-brown to white banding, the iris is yellow, the wax skin and beak are pale yellow. The upper side is red-brown with white spots on the wing-coverts , the underside is light-brown with red-brown banding.

The call of the male is described as 3 to 6 tones called "kroo-kroo-kroo-kroo" over a few seconds.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects as well as arachnids , mice , small snakes , shellfish and young birds.

The breeding season is between July in Gabon and February to December in Cameroon. The nest is made in caves.

Hazardous situation

The little owl is not considered endangered ('' least concern '').
