The Aeroporto Internacional Nelson Mandela (until 2012 Praia International Airport ) is the airport of the Cape Verdean capital Praia on the island of Santiago . Located about three kilometers northeast of the city, the airport opened on October 23, 2005 as a replacement for the old Francisco Mendes International Airport . It is named after Nelson Mandela .
Other important airports in the country are the main airport Amílcar Cabral International Airport on the island of Sal, which is especially popular with tourists, and the São Pedro Airport in São Pedro near Mindelo on São Vicente .
The airport is mainly used by the airline TACV for domestic flights as well as for connections to Lisbon , Paris , Providence , Fortaleza and Recife ( Brazil ) as well as to some African countries. TAP Portugal also flies to Lisbon . There are also domestic flights operated by the Cabo Verde Express and Halcyonair companies .
The take-off and landing runway is to be extended from the current 2100 meters to 2600 meters so that larger aircraft can also land. The terminal building is also being expanded. The costs are € 36 million.
