Pramila Patten

Pramila Patten (* 1958 ) is a lawyer from Mauritius who was a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women between 2003 and 2017 and who has been the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflicts since 2017 .

Life

After attending school, Pramila Patten began studying law at the Ealing College of Higher Education at the University of West London , which she completed with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). She then completed a postgraduate degree in law at University College London with a Master of Laws (LL.M.). She was then admitted to the bar ( Barrister-at-Law ) and after her return to Mauritius worked as a judge at a district court between 1987 and 1988 and at the same time as a lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of Mauritius from 1987 to 1992 . She was then a member of the International Women's Rights Action Watch between 1993 and 2002 and a consultant at the Ministry of Women's Rights, Child Development and Family Welfare from 2000 to 2004.

Pramila Patten, a legal expert on sexual and gender-based violence and women's, peace and security matters, was a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women from 2003 to 2017 . In 2009 she was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as a member of the International Commission to Investigate the September 28, 2009 massacre in Conakry , Guinea , in which 157 people were killed and in a demonstration against the authoritarian policies of President Moussa Dadis Camara 1,200 were injured. She also became a member of the Advisory Board of Observers on Women's Rights in Africa within the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in 2010 and was also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Framework Project for Due Diligence between 2012 and 2014 . Furthermore, in 2014 she became a member of a high-level global study and advisory group on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 of October 31, 2000 on the strengthening of women's rights and their importance for world peace.

On 12 April 2017 was Pramila Patten as the successor of from Sierra Leone originating Zainab Bangura by UN Secretary General António Guterres to the UN Special Representative appointed in conflicts on sexual violence.
