The Pratunam market (in Thai ประตูน้ำ , pronounced [ pràtuː-náːm ], literally: “Gate of water” (sluice, weir)) is the largest market for textiles in Thailand . The market is located in the district ( Khet ) Ratchathewi in Bangkok .

offer

The Pratunam market is considered to be the most important textile market in the city, alongside the Bobe market (at the intersection of the Saen Saep and Phadung Krung Kasaem khlongs). That's why not only locals buy here, but also foreign wholesalers and exporters . Outside the actual market area, numerous, mostly Indian, Middle Eastern and African export companies have set up shop, which have mainly specialized in textiles.

In addition to textiles and fabrics, the numerous smaller and larger shops also offer fashion accessories such as belts , sunglasses , shoes , suitcases and hats .

Location and history

Pratunam Market is located in one of the oldest parts of the city on the corner of Petchaburi and Ratchaprarop Streets, very close to the Indra Regent Hotel and the Baiyoke II Tower. In earlier times, Chinese cabbage was mainly grown on the fertile land before it was converted into a business district.

Directly across from Petchaburistraße is the Platinum Fashion Mall and not far away is Pantip Plaza , a shopping center for computers and electronics.

traffic

Pratunam is not directly accessible via the Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) or the subway (MRT), but the area is not far from the Siam, Chidlom and Ratchathewi Skytrain stations.

Below the bridge over the Khlong Saen Saep at the Pratunam junction (where Ratchaprarop and Ratchadamri streets meet Phetchaburi streets) is the central pier of Bangkok's main downtown boat line between Phan Fa Lilat on Khlong Mahanak and Bangkapi on Khlong Saen Saep.
