Ratchathewi ( Thai ราชเทวี ) is one of the 50 districts (Khet) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . Ratchathewi is located in the eastern inner city area, south of the Victory Monument . The district has the function of a central transport hub.

geography

Ratchathewi is bounded in the north by Khlong Samsen, in the east by Soi Asoke, in the south by Khlong Saen Saep and in the west by the railway line that runs from Hua Lamphong Central Station via Bang Sue Station to all of Thailand.

The neighboring districts are clockwise from the north: Phaya Thai , Din Daeng , Huai Khwang , Watthana , Pathum Wan , Pom Prap Sattru Phai and Dusit .

A station on the BTS Skytrain is also called Ratchathewi.

history

This district was part of the Phaya Thai District until 1989 . Its name comes from the Ratchathewi Intersection , the intersection of the two great streets Thanon Phetchaburi (Phetchaburi Street) and Thanon Phayathai (Phayathai Street) . Originally it was the name of a wife of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) , Phra Nangchao Sukhumala Marasri Phra Ratchathewi . By the way, "Phra Rachathewi" (also: Phra Rajathevi) is an official title for royal wives.

Attractions

  • The Victory Monument was built by Plaek Pibulsongkram , Prime Minister at the time , to honor the 59 people killed by the French army in 1940 in the Franco-Thai War in the Luang Prabang and Champasak area . The dedication ceremony was held on June 24, 1942. The monument has the shape of five bayonets arranged at the top. There are five statues around the base to symbolize the army, navy, air force, police and citizens. 809 names of those killed in action in World War II and the Korean War are engraved on the statues . Today the square around the monument is a busy bus station, a Skytrain station is also next door.
  • The Wang Phaya Thai (Phayathai Palace) was built by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as a weekend refuge.
  • Baiyoke Tower and Baiyoke Tower 2 (tallest building in Bangkok)
  • Wang Suan Pakkad (Suan Pakkad Palace, "Vegetable Garden Palace")

Shopping

The district of Pratu Nam ("water gate", Thai: ประตูน้ำ ) is known for its inexpensive textiles. Barely recognizable entrances lead to a labyrinth of hundreds of small sales stands that also offer textiles for wholesalers and retailers.

Pantip Plaza is one of the largest IT shopping centers in Thailand. There is inexpensive computer hardware, software and accessories, as well as cell phones and digital cameras. Despite multiple raids, the local copier scene for films, music and software could not be noticeably weakened.

The Victory Monument ( Anusawari Chaisamoraphum or 'Victory Monument') is a central transfer point for city buses. Numerous lines of the public mass transport company (BMTA) touch each other. The Victory Monument is also the departure point for minibuses, which mainly serve provincial capitals, but also smaller towns in central Thailand and excursion destinations (e.g. Pattaya ).

There are three stations on the Bangkok Skytrain in Ratchathewi: Ratchathewi, Phaya Thai and Victory Monument (Anusawari Chaisamoraphum).

Express boats run regularly on the Khlong Saen Saep on the southern border of the district. Pratu Nam Pier (Ratchadamri Street) is the central station of the waterbus network. From here boats go west to Phan Fa Bridge in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district (near the Golden Mount in the northeastern part of the "old town" of Bangkok) and east to Wat Si Bunrueang in the northeastern Bang Kapi district .

The Bangkok Metro (subway, MRT) runs below the eastern border from Ratchathewi to the Huai Khwang district . The Phetchaburi stop serves the eastern tip of the district.

With Phaya Thai , the city-side terminals of the City Line is located in the district of the airport feeder airport rail link , as well as the stop Ratchaprarop . The Express Line also departs from the Makkasan stop on the eastern edge of the district and goes to the airport without any further stops. This station is supposed to fulfill the function of an airport terminal that is shifted into the city ("City Air Terminal").

Ratchathewi is intersected by the paid city highways Sirat Expressway and Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway . In addition, Phahonyothin Street , the northern main artery of Bangkok and Thailand's national road No. 1, begins at the Victory Column .

health

Ratchathewi is home to several of Bangkok's largest hospitals: Phramongkutklao Hospital , which is under the Thai army but also treats civilian patients; the Ramathibodi Hospital , which is one of the two university hospitals of Mahidol University ; as well as the government- owned Rajavithi Hospital directly at the Victory Monument.
