Bang Khun Thian ( Thai : บางขุนเทียน , [bāːŋ kʰǔn tʰīan] ) is one of the 50 districts (Khet) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . Bang Khun Thian is a suburban district in the extreme southwest of the city.
geography
The neighboring districts and areas are clockwise from the north: Bang Bon , Chom Thong , and Thung Khru , in the province of Samut Prakan lies the Amphoe Phra Samut Chedi , to the west of the coastline to the Gulf of Thailand in the province of Samut Sakhon lies the Mueang Samut Sakhon .
Bang Khun Thian is one of the largest in area and at the same time one of the most sparsely populated districts of Bangkok. The settlement structure is suburban , in the south of the district even rural.
history
Bang Khun Thian is a very old district that was established as an amphoe of Thonburi in 1867 .
In 1972 the provinces of Thonburi and Phra Nakhon were merged to form "Krung Thep Maha Nakhon", with Bang Khae becoming a subdistrict of Phasi Charoen. The administrative units of the new capital were retained, only the "Amphoe" was renamed to Khet , the Tambon to Khwaeng , so Bang Khun Thian became a Khet of Bangkok, consisting of the Khwaeng Bang Khun Thian, Bang Kho, Chom Thong, Bang Mot , Tha Kham, Bang Bon and Samae Dam.
As the population grew, in 1989 the Khwaeng Bang Khun Thian, Bang Kho, Bang Mot and Chom Thong were merged into a new district of Chom Thong.
In 1997 the Khwaeng Bang Bon was separated from the northern part of Bang Khun Thian and made into the new district of Bang Bon .
location
With Bang Khun Thian, Bangkok has the only stretch of coast to the Gulf of Thailand . It is about 5 km long and consists mainly of a mangrove area. Many shrimp farms have settled here, which gradually destroy the natural protection of the mangrove belt ( see also : web links).
A group of macaques ( Macaca fascicularis , Thai ลิง แสม ) who feed on catching crabs has settled here near a small fishing village.
The coastal area is known for its seafood restaurants.
