Watthana ( Thai : วัฒนา , also: Vadhana ) is one of the 50 khet (districts) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand .
geography
Watthana is bounded in the north by the Khlong Saen Saep (Saen Saep Canal), in the east by the Khlong Tan and the Khlong Phra Khanong and the city highway 3 ( Chalong Rat Expressway ), in the south by the Thanon Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Street) and in West from City Highway 1 ( Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway ).
The neighboring districts are clockwise from the north: Ratchathewi , Huai Khwang , Suan Luang , Phra Khanong , Khlong Toei , Sathorn and Pathum Wan .
history
Watthana was part of the Khet Khlong Toei until 1998 . It was separated in order to be able to offer the residents their own administration.
The name of the district comes from Princess Galyani Vadhana , the older sister of King Bhumibol Adulyadej . Vadhana (spelling according to the Thai transcription system : Watthana ) means "development". This district is one of the most modern khet in Bangkok.
orientation
Watthana has now become one of the most important business districts in Bangkok and a center of tourist (night) life. There are numerous large tourist hotels and residential complexes in which many immigrants also live. The district is crossed from north to south by well-known side streets ( Soi ) of the southeast running Thanon Sukhumvit ( Sukhumvit Street ): Soi Nana Nuea ("side street Nana North", also Sukhumvit 3), Thanon Asok Montri (Sukhumvit 21), named after the Indian King Ashoka , Soi Ekkamai (Sukhumvit 63), Phra Kanong-Khlong Tan Road (Sukhumvit 71) and a small part of Soi On Nut (Sukhumvit 77). There are stops of the same name on the Bangkok Skytrain on each of the side streets mentioned .
shop
- Thanon Sukhumvit ( Sukhumvit Street ): The sidewalks between Soi 3 and Soi 15 are occupied by vendors selling typical tourist goods.
- Foodland: In Soi 5 there is a branch of this chain of Thai supermarkets. It also has a 24-hour coffee shop .
- Villa Plaza: This shopping and entertainment area is located between Sukhumvit Soi 33 and Soi 31, centered around the Villa (open 24 hours) and Fuji supermarkets. There are a few British-style pubs here as well as clubs geared towards the Japanese only.
- Thong Lo: This side street (actually Sukhumvit Soi 55) became fashionable in the 2000s. There are a number of expensive restaurants and boutiques.
- Major Sukhumvit: A large branch of the Major Cineplex cinema chain is located next to Ekkamai station on the Bangkok Skytrain . It also contains a bowling alley, restaurants and shops.
- the Terminal 21 shopping center opened in 2011 at the Asok intersection (transfer from Skytrain station "Asok" to subway station "Sukhumvit")
Restaurants and night life
- “Little Africa”: In the vicinity of the Grace Hotel between Soi Nana Nuea (“Side Street Nana North”, also Sukhumvit 3) and Sukhumvit Soi 5, there is a network of narrow streets with numerous Middle East restaurants.
- Soi Cowboy : Side street of Thanon Asok Montri (Sukhumvit Soi 21) with go-go bars.
- Thong Lo has been one of the hippest nightlife areas in Bangkok since the mid-2000s.
- A similar development took place shortly afterwards in the neighboring Ekkamai (Sukhumvit Soi 63), where, as in Thong Lo, bars and restaurants are primarily aimed at a younger and more sophisticated public.
Culture
- The Siam Society : It was founded in 1904 with the aim of bringing interest in Thai art, culture and nature not only to its own people, but also to interested foreigners through lectures, study trips and book publications. It is located on Soi Asok near the Bangkok Metro station of the same name .
- Japan Foundation: On the 10th floor of the Sermmit Tower on Asok-Montri-Straße, the foundation has a library, organizes art exhibitions, lectures and film screenings, mainly to convey Japanese culture to the Thai people.
- Srinakharinwirot University : The Prasarnmit Campus is on Asok-Montri-Strasse.
- Pridi Phanomyong Institute: The institute, founded in honor of the Thai statesman Pridi Phanomyong , hosts lectures and film screenings. It is on Soi Thong Lo.
Hospitals
- Bumrungrad International Hospital : The largest hospital in the area and one of Thailand's leading medical tourism hospitals is located on Soi 3 on Sukhumvit Street. It is aimed in particular at patients from the Arab Gulf States. Part of Soi 3 is known as “Soi Arab” or “Little Arabia” of Bangkok, as mainly Middle Eastern and Arabic shops and restaurants have settled here.
- Samitevej Hospital: Another upscale hospital in Sukhumvit Soi 49.
- Camillian Hospital: A small Catholic hospital on Soi Thong Lo.
traffic
The Sukhumvit Skytrain (BTS) line runs above Sukhumvit Street . On the southern border of Watthana District are the Nana , Asok , Phrom Phong , Thong Lo , Ekkamai , Phra Khanong and On Nut stops .
The Bangkok Metro (subway, MRT) has its Sukhumvit station in the Watthana district. It corresponds to the Asok Skytrain station and is the central transfer point for the subway and Sukhumvit line.
Another public non-road mode of transport that serves the district is the diesel speedboats on the Khlong Saen Saep . Jetties include Nana Nuea (northern part of Soi Nana), Asok (Asokmontri Street), Prasanmit (Sinakharinwirot University) and Soi Thonglo
