Phaya Thai ( Thai : พญาไท ) is one of the 50 khet (districts) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . Phaya Thai is a northern inner city district on both sides of Thanon Phahonyothin (Phahonyothin Street)

Phaya Thai is also the name of one of the larger access roads in Bangkok (Thanon Phaya Thai) and a station on the Bangkok Skytrain (Sathani Phaya Thai) , but both are now in the neighboring district of Ratchathewi .

geography

Phaya Thai is bounded in the north by Khlong Bang Sue, in the east by Vibhavadi-Rangsit-Straße (or the elevated Don Mueang Tollway above it ), in the south by Khlong Sam Sen and in the west by the railway line from Hua main station Lamphong leads to all of Thailand via Bang Sue Railway Station .

The neighboring counties are clockwise from the north: Chatuchak , Din Daeng , Ratchathewi and Dusit .

history

The Phaya Thai district was created in 1966, combining parts of Dusit and Bang Kapi . The district is named after Phaya Thai Road. Since then, the district has seen many changes. In 1973, the Huai Khwang district was split off from Phaya Thai. In 1978 the boundaries between Huai Khwang, Phaya Thai and Bang Kapi were adjusted to maintain an even population distribution.

In 1989, the Ratchathewi District was created, which was formed from the southern area of the old Phaya Thai District. Eventually Phaya Thai had to hand over the eastern subdistricts to the newly created Din Daeng district , so today only one subdistrict, Sam Sen Nai, remains.

As a result of the various changes, the Phaya Thai Palace , the Phaya Thai campus of Mahidol University and the Phaya Thai Skytrain station are now in the Ratchathewi district , the Thanon Phaya Thai partly in Ratchathewi, partly in Pathum Wan , but not in the actual district Phaya Thai.

Attractions

Much of the eastern part of Phaya Thai belongs to the Thai army . Among other things, several infantry battalions of the king's bodyguard are stationed here. In addition, there is the sports stadium and the radio and television station ( Thai TV5 ) of the army, as well as the Royal Thai Army Club.

Numerous government buildings can be found in Phaya Thai:

The Philatelic Museum reopened after extensive renovation. It is located behind the Samsen Nai post office at Saphan Kwai ( สะพานควาย "Buffalo Bridge").

The residential areas are more concentrated in the Saphan Kwai area with many shops, apartment buildings and a Big C mall.

The only Buddhist temple ( Wat ) in the district is Wat Phai Tan ( วัด ไผ่ ตัน ).
