history
Bang Khen was established as an amphoe in Phra Nakhon Province in 1897 . In 1972 the provinces of Thon Buri and Phra Nakhon were merged to form a special administrative area in the capital Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok). The districts were renamed from Amphoe to Khet , the sub-districts from Tambon to Khwaeng . At that time, Bang Khen was a district with eight sub-districts.
Bang Khen was a very large district at the time, but it was significantly reduced in size when Chatuchak and Don Mueang districts were newly formed in 1989 . It was downsized again in 1997 when the Sai Mai district in the north was separated, but at the same time Bang Khen was given a sub-district of Lat Phrao .
