Sathon ( Thai : สาทร , also Sathorn ) is one of the 50 districts (Khet) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . Sathon is located in the area of the southern inner city south of Thanon Sathon (Sathon Street). It is one of the main business districts in Bangkok. Here is the seat of the German and Austrian embassies.

geography

Sathon is bounded in the north by the Khlong Sathon (Sathon Canal) and the Rama IV Street (Thanon Phra Ram 4) , in the east by the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway and the Thanon Yen Akkard, in the south by several small roads such as the Thanon Chan, the Thanon Phai Ngoen and the Khlong Kruai (Kruai Canal). The Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ) forms the western border of the district.

The neighboring districts are clockwise from the north: Bang Rak , Pathum Wan , Khlong Toei , Yan Nawa , Bang Kho Laem , and Khlong San (on the other bank of Mae Nam Chao Phraya).

history

Sathon was formerly part of the Yan Nawa District . Since it was quite large and had a large number of residents, a district office for Yan Nawa was initially set up on March 9, 1989 to administer three of the Khwaeng of Yan Nawa. But shortly afterwards, on November 9, 1989, it became the independent district of Sathon.

The name was taken from the Sathon Road and the Khlong Sathon. This canal was created in 1888 by a Chinese entrepreneur named Poh Yom ('Mr. Yom') as a connection from the Mae Nam Chao Phraya to the former Khlong Hua Lamphong. At that time the canal was called Khlong Poh Yom after its builder . Only when King Chulalongkorn gave him the title Luang Sathon Rachayuk ( หลวง สาทร ราชา ยุกต์ ), the Khlong was renamed accordingly and got its current name. At first there were shady trees on its bank, of which one can hardly suspect anything today, after the Thanon Sathon was concreted on both sides of the canal.

Since the 1990s, Sathon has developed into one of the central business districts of Bangkok, which is mainly characterized by expensive high-rise office buildings and luxury hotels. With The MET (228 m, completed in 2009) and Empire Tower 1 (227 m, 1,999 completed) are in this district two of the tallest buildings in Thailand.

Thanon Sathon

The Thanon Sathon (Sathon Street, in English usage "Sathon Road" or "Satorn Road") is one of the main streets in Bangkok. It consists of Thanon Sathon Nuea (Northern Sathon Road, belongs to Bang Rak District ) and Thanon Sathon Tai (Southern Sathon Road, belongs to Sathon District). Today the Khlong Sathon (Sathon Canal) can hardly be made out in the middle . At its western end is the Taksin Bridge over the Chao Phraya, which is often referred to as the Sathon Bridge. Sathon Street is an important connecting road between modern Bangkok on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya and the somewhat more "down-to-earth" Thonburi on the western bank.

The Silom line of the Bangkok Skytrain runs over a large part of the Thanon Sathon to the Saphan Taksin station on the Taksin Bridge and, since 2009, has continued over the river bridge to Thonburi.

The intersection of the Sathon with the south-facing Thanon Narathiwat Ratchanakharin has been expanded into a business district with many new high-rise office buildings in recent years. Further major construction projects are being planned.

Numerous states have their embassies in the area along the Thanon Sathon, which is therefore considered to be Bangkok's embassy district. This also includes Germany and Austria. The Bangkok branches of the international institutes Alliance française and Goethe-Institut are also located in this area . A branch of the first Soi of Thanon Sathon Tai, in which the Goethe-Institut is located, is nicknamed Soi Goethe (Goethegasse).

In May 2010 the intersection of Sathon Street and Rama IV Street was one of the scenes of the violent clashes during the riots of the "red shirts"

Attractions

Wat Yan Nawa
Soi Wanglee (2006)
  • Wat Yan Nawa (วัด ยานนาวา ) is an old temple ( Wat ) from the Ayutthaya period . With its peculiar chedis ,modeled ona Chinese junk , the temple is probably the most famous in the Sathon district. Since the original junks can hardly be seen today, a kind of monument was built for them through this chedi. In the Kingdom of Ayutthaya this temple was still called Wat Kok Khwai (วัด คอก ควาย ), during the Thonburi and early Rattanakosin periods it was called Wat Kok Krabue (วัด คอก กระบือ ). The junks chedi and the viharn were made in the time of King Rama III. (Phra Nangklao), at that time the temple got its current name.
  • Soi Wanglee (actually Soi Charoen Krung 52) is a small side street ( Soi ) to Thanon Charoen Krung , which runs between Thanon Sathon Tai and Wat Yan Nawa to Chao Phraya. Until about 2007 there was still an intact neighborhood that had grown over decades. Historic Chinese shops and two to three-story apartment buildings lined this soi. The owner of the property, in agreement with Wat Yan Nawa , decided to demolish most of the houses, some of which were 80 years old, in order to build a new hotel. The construction project was abandoned in 2009, so that the demolition of the old buildings was pointless and the area is now neglected. On the corner of Charoen Krung, however, there is still the Prasithipol Bar, one of the oldest dance halls in Bangkok.
  • Wat Don ( วัด ดอน ), another old temple, built in 1797 by immigrants from Tavoy ( Myanmar ) during the reign of King Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I) . Nearby is the Wat Don Cemetery , a cemetery with numerous Chinese graves.

traffic

On the northern edge of the district, along Sathon Street, the Silom line of the Skytrain (BTS) runs. Two stops serve Sathon: Surasak and Saphan Taksin . In the north eastern corner of the district, at Rama IV. Street, the station is located Lumpini the metro (MRT).

The Sathon pier at the Taksin Bridge is the central station of the express boat lines, which operate in a north-south direction on the Chao Phraya River and represent another fast connection (independent of road traffic) with other parts of the city.

education

Sathon is home to the main campus of the Technical University of Rajamangala Krungthep, the Assumption Commercial College and the Rongrian St. Louis Sueksa Catholic private school .

The district is divided into three sub-districts ( Khwaeng ) :
