features

The preble shrew is one of the smallest species in the genus Sorex in North America . It reaches a total length of 77–95 mm with a tail length of 28–38 mm. The body mass is 2.1–4.1 g. It has 7–11 mm long rear legs and 8–11 mm long ears. The top is covered with gray fur, while the fur on the underside is silver-gray in color. The feet have light brown hair on the top and the tail is divided into an olive brown top and a hazel brown bottom. Sorex preblei differs from closely related species such as the Merriam shrew ( Sorex merriami ) in different details of the skull structure.

distribution

The distribution area of the species is in western North America and extends from the plateau of the Columbia Plateau over parts of the Rocky Mountains to higher areas of the Great Plains . The preble shrew was registered between 1,280 and 2,550 meters above sea level. The habitat varies between semi-arid areas with meadows and bushes, coniferous forests in the mountains, wetlands adjacent to lakes and landscapes dominated by poplars and members of the Artemisia genus .

Way of life

The species corresponds in behavior to the other red-toothed shrews. It eats insects and other invertebrates such as earthworms, mollusks and centipedes. The preble shrew does not hibernate and can be diurnal or nocturnal. She tolerates various other shrews and rodents in her territory.
