Prega Ramsamy

Pakeereesamy "Prega" Ramsamy (born May 5, 1950 in Beau Bassin-Rose Hill , Mauritius ) is a Mauritian economist and former Executive Secretary of the South African Development Community (SADC).

Life

After studying, Ramsamy became an economist in the Mauritian Ministry of Economic Planning in 1975 before becoming Senior Expert on Trade at the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), a regional organization based in Lusaka , in 1983 .

In 1991 he was appointed Head of Technical Cooperation and Development Aid at COMESA and later Director of Technical Cooperation and Financial Development. In this role he was involved in the planning of regional macroeconomic policies for sustainable economic growth and the development of project proposals for donor countries. In addition, among other tasks, he drew up guidelines for the member states on issues such as trade liberalization .

In 1997 he moved to the South African Development Community (SADC), where he became chief economist and, due to his previous activities, had a wealth of experience in regional economic integration policy. He later became Deputy Executive Secretary and, in this role, succeeded Kaire Mbuende from January 1, 2000 to March 9, 2001, in his position as Executive Secretary on a provisional basis.

On March 9, 2001, Ramsamy, who was particularly concerned with building diplomatic consensus, officially became Executive Secretary of SADC and held this position until he was replaced by Tomaz Salomão on September 1, 2005. In this position, he held a speech in January 2005 an international conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the Barbados Program for Sustainable Development for Small Island Developing States.
