Tomaz Augusto Salomão (born October 16, 1954 in Inharrime , Inhambane Province ) is a Mozambican politician and economist and was Secretary General of the South African Development Community (SADC).

Salomão came from a simple family. His father João Salomão Cumbana worked as a paramedic, accountant and teacher. His mother was a nurse and a domestic worker. He obtained primary education between 1960 and 1965 at the Carneiro Araújo School in Inhambane . Until 1969 he stayed at the industrial and commercial school ( Escola Industrial e Comercial ) in Inhambane, where he received a professional qualification. He then went to the Maputo Commercial Institute ( Instituto Comercial de Maputo ), where he stayed until 1972. In 1972 he graduated as an auditor.

Before graduating, he worked in the research office of the Caixa Económica Montepio between 1973 and 1974 . Until 1976 he was also a member of the Board of Directors of Montepio de Moçambique .

In 1977 he earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo , followed by a licentiate in 1988 and a master’s degree in 1992.

Between 2002 and 2004 he taught at his alma mater . In addition, Salomão received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , USA , for Ph.D.

Salomão held senior positions in Mozambique politics for nearly two decades. Between 1994 and 1999 he worked in the Ministry of Finance and Planning. First as Deputy Minister for Finance and Planning and later from 1994 he headed the ministry. At the same time as his position as finance minister, Salomão was Mozambique's representative at the African Development Bank . Between 2000 and 2004 he was Minister for Transport and Communication at SADC. At that time he also held other international positions, including from 2003 to 2004 for the African Union . In the 2004 general election , Tomaz Salomão was elected Member of Parliament.

At the summit of the SADC heads of state and government in August 2005, Salomão was appointed Secretary General of SADC. His term of office ended in 2013 with the SADC Summit Conference in Lilongwe , Malawi in August 2013 . Now Stergomena Tax from Tanzania has succeeded him in office.
